Fabricated from components that were originally intended for aerial reconnaissance and police surveillance, Electronic Countermeasures is a flock of GPS-enabled quadcopter drones that broadcast their own WiFi network as a flying pirate file sharing infrastructure. They swarm into formation, transmit their pirate network, and then disperse, escaping detection, only to reform elsewhere. These behaviours allow the flock to become a highly site-specific means to create peer-to-peer communication.
As the drones fly and float, audience members can log on to the drone network with their phones and laptops. Using the drones as a local network they can upload files and share data with one another. As people interact with the drones, the drones glow with vibrant colours, break formation and their flight pattern becomes more dramatic and expressive. The drone’s aerial choreography highlights how nomadic infrastructures can act as robotic data clouds, floating between buildings like an aerial Napster or flying Pirate Bay.

While in old nature people build shelters to protect themselves from natural forces like wind and rain, today one has to protect oneself from nextnatural forces like electromagnetic signals, cellphone tracking, closed circuit television, drone attacks, radiation, etc.

While the design of this protected pocket of space may not be archtiecturally pleasing, the principle of it being a portable, pop-up pocket of urban privacy strongly links to my idea of a space in the park to become disconnected and sheltered.

One such counter-method to the rise of a “global surveillance society” is artist Adam Harvey’s Stealth Wear. Stealth Wear is a clothing line that is designed to challenge authoritarian surveillance systems like drones. It is a vision for fashion that addresses “the growing need to exert control over what we are slowly losing, our privacy”
Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, can be equipped with thermal imaging cameras and deployed by the military or police to locate individuals using heat signatures. The metallic fibres in Harvey‘s lightweight garments reflect heat, masking the wearer’s thermal signature and rendering them undetectable.
